Information systems quality assessment

Doctoral research

My research addresses a question that sounds simple but is not: how do you measure whether an information system actually works for the organisation it is installed in — rather than merely meeting its technical specification.

Dissertation topic

A model and method for organisation-oriented information systems quality assessment (Organisation-Oriented Model). The work rests on four scientific results (NR1–NR4) and comprises an Organisation-Features Description Operator and a confirmed-usefulness evaluation method.

The outputs of the students’ project-based training are enormous and have transformed the face of the Faculty of Exact Sciences.

The Projects & Industry Collaboration Center

The model I built: a two-semester project in which students develop and research in order to create a genuinely valuable product for a high-tech company, gaining hands-on experience along the way.

  • More than 25 projects successfully completed for various companies, including government bodies and technology leaders.
  • Students work with the latest technologies and best-practice documentation, making the output easy to integrate into the company’s core product.
  • The project manager is the partner company’s single point of contact — participation costs the company almost nothing in time or resources.
  • Where appropriate, an NDA is signed by every project participant.
  • Project domains: GIS, cyber, IoT, AI/ML, Web and SaaS, Fin-Tech, 3D, agriculture, drones and navigation.
  • The Smart Campus project: dozens of sensors and a LoRaWAN network deployed on campus to monitor living conditions and air quality, including UI development — and a candidacy for the Horizon programme in smart buildings.

In 2022 HIT submitted an institutional programme, on which I served as Projects Development Manager, aiming for every student to gain genuine professional experience as part of their degree — part of the institute’s 2021–2025 five-year plan.

  • An institutional array was established covering academic and professional staff, a projects centre, collaboration agreements with leading high-tech industries, training courses, development labs and a data and metrics system — all under one roof, as a "technological incubator" for students and faculty.
  • The strategic outline: assessing the current state and setting targets, building technological infrastructure and prioritising practical projects, prioritising collaboration agreements, and building specialisation training tracks.
  • Ongoing collaboration agreements were signed with industry, government, academic and medical bodies — high-tech companies, government ministries, local authorities, security organisations and health organisations.
  • The programme runs in the Faculty of Sciences and expands gradually to further faculties — electrical and electronic engineering, technology management, learning technologies, design, and digital medical technologies.
  • A structured evaluation system: questionnaires for students, lecturers and host organisations, plus longitudinal studies examining salary, employment integration rates, social mobility among disadvantaged populations and gender comparisons.

Location-based applications for the urban space — some with the "Erez" coordination administration

  • City-Pop — resident-side reporting of city faults; Android synchronised to a central server in real time
  • City-Manager — the manager side: oversight of open faults and dispatch of the right crew to the exact point
  • Geo-News — news by radius from the device and by interest, with events marked on the map
  • Infra-Management — mapping and measuring municipal lighting fixtures for decision makers
  • Geo-Chat "Here iM" — group members share live locations on a shared map
  • Geo-Photo "Pick a Pic" — a collaborative photo repository laid out geographically
  • Movement coordination for international organisations — planned route marking, data entry and documentation of emergency movements

  • 3D Secure 2.0 implementation — the merchant-side server, including frictionless and challenge flows
  • EMV QR code — a merchant web system and an Android app paying by code scan to the EMV standard
  • P2P ETL — a peer-to-peer communication and data transfer protocol, implemented in Python
  • Berlin Group API simulation — the testing environment European PSD2 requires banks to expose
  • Data science — predicting consumer behaviour and the effect of 3D Secure on transaction approval rates

  • Patient questionnaires — a web system for physicians to enter questionnaires tailored to each patient
  • Patient app — answering the daily questionnaire from a phone, fully interfaced with the server
  • Pacemakers info-processing — hardware and software interfacing with different pacemaker machines, extracting their data and unifying it into a single database

From the 3D model to the flying platform

  • Object identification from a 3D geographic model — manual sampling of buildings plus automatic detection via image-processing algorithms, exporting to SHP and GeoJSON
  • "Bounded GPS" — an Arduino and GPS component keeping the user inside a defined polygon; part of a library for controlling autonomous agricultural vehicles

Conferences I organised

Alongside the mentoring I organised national conferences connecting the general public to the technology surrounding it — and exhibited the selected student projects there.

  • "New Trends in the Public Space" — a conference I organised in August 2019, set out to show that technological progress is not remote but a daily component of our lives.
  • Four lectures: founding the GIS practice at the JNF and building GIS environments worldwide · the information-security risks facing a private individual · water and habitat management in the Gaza Strip for the International Committee of the Red Cross · financial technology and where citizens meet it.
  • Running alongside the conference — an exhibition of the Projects Center’s selected projects, all aimed at the general public.
